What is "IT"?
IT stands for "Information Technology" and refers
to computer maintenance and control of computers and associated systems.
Ultimately, IT "keeps the computers happy, to keep the people happy,
to keep the boss happy, to make money!"
Network Administrators Computer
Services does "Contract IT". What is "Contract IT"?
Contract IT means outsourcing your computer maintenance
to Network Administrators because we can
do all or some of your IT more cost effectively for you. (See "Who
should NOT use Network Administrators Computer Services, Inc.?"
"Who SHOULD use Network Administrators Computer
Services?" and "My business already has "in house"
IT. How can Network Administrators Computer Services, Inc. help me?")
What is meant by "computer maintenance"?
Keeping security programs and systems current so that files
are not purposefully corrupted, stolen, or accidentally misplaced. Maintaining
backup management to be sure important files are not destroyed by hardware/software
failure or site damage (theft, fire, flood). Making sure computers are
at peak performance. This results in few if any "crashes", and
very little down time. Additionally, software companies indicate their
software needs to be check and corrected approximately weekly. (Many people
outside of professional IT don't even know this.) Hardware maintenance
includes cleaning and repair of existing mechanicals, as well as adding
peripherals. Also under this category Network Administrators
would place network installation and maintenance (adding, moving or subtracting
cables, mechanicals, and yes even people). Finally, a company web page
(see " Does my business need a web site?" needs set up, design
and management. These are all the things that full time IT staff does
for larger businesses. Smaller businesses need that same stuff, but until
Network Administrators, smaller businesses
couldn't afford professional help.
Why would I need "computer maintenance"?
Computers should not "crash", "freeze up",
"lock out" (unless ordered to), loose information, or slow people
down. What people put up with from the average computer system would never
be tolerated even from a household appliance. Remember when we were told
that computers would make our life easier? If your computer isn't there
for you when and how you need it, you need computer maintenance. Network
Administrators knows how to get your computers to serve you, to
get the help and timesavings that you need. Computers should be a pleasure,
not a pain.
Can I just do my own computer maintenance?
If you love computers, have the time to work on them, and
the time to study the daily changing computer world so as to keep abreast
of all pertinent facets of software, hardware, and security issues, by
all means; you can do your own computer maintenance. Just be sure you
recognize you are part of the IT department. Otherwise you are stealing
time from another duty to do IT. You will do best what you enjoy best.
Network Administrators staff actually enjoy
working on computers. If we have to admit it, see "What are Nerds?"
Can't I just call and get help from the
company from which I bought my software or hardware?
An article in FORBES magazine (July 23, 2001, page 118)
by Stephen Manes titled "The Four-Byte Shuffle" recounts his
problems trying to get service online and by phone. Getting no real help,
he says, "
I employed the last-resort, press-only strategy of
asking public relations people for service above and beyond what normal
mortals get." That kind of influence finally got the problem taken
care of, but he finishes the article stating, "But poorly designed
products, slipshod quality control and euphemisms like 'issues' are business
as usual in the hardware and software trades. Folks like me are lucky
enough to have special access when things like this go wrong. The average
user doesn't stand a chance." We would add that we are aware of 2-hour
on hold times trying to get a simple service question answered. What is
your time worth?
What is a network?
Regarding computers, a network is a grouping of independent
computers linked together to communicate. That communication includes,
but is not limited to, sharing files of information, and sharing hardware
such as printers or modems.
What is a LAN?
LAN stands for "Local Area Network". It refers
to computers interconnected in a local geographical area, such as within
the same office, building, or group of buildings. Sometimes referred to
as an intranet.
What is a WAN?
WAN stands for "Wide Area Network". It refers
to computers interconnected in a wide geographical area, such as between
cities or countries. The Internet is a WAN.
Who should NOT use Network Administrators Computer Services, Inc.?
In our opinion, if your firm has over 25 computers, you
need to have your own dedicated, full time IT Manager. (P-l-e-a-s-e
do
not try to hire any of our staff. -ed-) However, see "My business
already has "in house" IT. How can Network
Administrators Computer Services, Inc. help me?"
Who SHOULD use Network Administrators Computer

If your business has between 4 and 25 computers, including
notebooks carried by staff, you should use Network
Administrators because we can do your IT faster, better, and at

My business already has "in house"
IT. How can Network Administrators Computer Services, Inc. help me?
Network Administrators can be your IT Department's resource
for assistance. When your IT gets sick, loses staff, has a spike in workload,
(or heaven forbid is actually allowed to go on a real vacation) Network
Administrators can step in with staff and knowledge to help.
Why are backups important?
As you probably know, a backup is a duplicate copy of computer
information to keep that information safe. The industry comment is, "How
much time one is willing to lose is how much one should back up".
Unfortunately, one can never know when a computer hardware or software,
nor when a catastrophic event such as theft, vandalism, flood, or fire,
may occur. Nor can the extent of the damage be known in advance. Network
Administrators programs your computers to do backups daily. Also
see " What is "Off-Site Backup" and who needs it?"
What is "Off-Site Backup" and
who needs it?
First see " Why are backups important?" The idea
of off-site backups further prevents important data from being lost. Obviously,
keeping backup information in the same room as your computer won't help
in a theft or fire situation. Network Administrators
Computer Services, Inc. can do weekly backups of your files, and hold
these backups, away from your site.
What are Nerds?
